Sheltering in Place

Be prepared for emergencies such as chemical agent incidents or hazardous materials accidents near your home. Make your shelter-in-place-kit now, so you can seal your shelter immediately if your local officials instruct you to shelter in place.

The Basics:
  • PRE-Cut plastic sheeting to cover doors, windows, vents, inset cabinets, mirrors, electrical outlets and switches. Make sure to cut the plastic at least six inches longer than the openings so you can tape it to the wall/floors.
  • DUCT Tape!!!! (greatest invention ever!) to attach the sheeting, cover cracks not big enough to use plastic sheeting for, and to fix a tear in your sheeting.
  • scissors!
  • radio with extra batteries
  • bottled water for each person (one gallon per person is suggested)
  • portable toilet with paper (and air freshener if you live in an all boy home like me!)
  • A large plastic bag for any contaminated clothing (seal it with the duct tape!)
Additionals:
Depending on who may be in your shelters, you may consider some of these things too:
  • a cordless or cellular phone
  • any special health care items
  • bring in your pets too!/pet supplies
  • baby supplies
  • pillows blankets
  • toys, books, games, etc to keep occupied
  • snacks with long shelf lives
  • change of clothing for each person in your shelter
Remember, you will not be asked to shelter-in-place for more than a few hours usually.
